Privacy & security

We recognise our responsibility to treat the information we obtain about you with care. We use personal information about you:

  • To provide you with a quote
  • To administer your policy if you take out our cover
  • To maintain and improve the services we provide to you
  • To research and tell you about other products and services.

Some of the personal information we ask you to provide may be sensitive. For example, with car insurance, you may have to give us information about your physical health and the physical health of other people who will be insured to drive your car. We also need to know about any motoring offences that you and other people who will be insured to drive your car may have. We will use this data for statistical analysis and in the administration of your policy if you decide to buy.

Fraud prevention, detection and claims history

To keep our premiums as low as possible we participate in a number of insurance industry initiatives to prevent and detect crime. As a valued customer, we think you'll appreciate the steps we are taking to provide the best car insurance cover.

To prevent and detect fraud we may at any time:

  1. Share information about you with other organisations and public bodies including the police.
  2. Check and/or file your details with fraud prevention agencies and databases and if you give us false or inaccurate information and we identify fraud, we will record this. We and other organisations may also search these agencies and databases from the UK and other countries to:
    - help make decisions about the provision and administration of insurance, credit and related services for you and members of your household
    - trace debtors or beneficiaries, recover debt, prevent fraud, and to manage your accounts or insurance policies
    - check your identity to prevent money laundering, unless you give us other satisfactory proof of identity; or
    - check details of job applicants and employees
    - Undertake credit searches and additional fraud searches.

If you would like to receive further details of the databases we access or contribute to, please write to the Data Protection Officer, Sainsburys Car Insurance, The Observatory, Reigate, Surrey RH2 0SG or email us at dpo@sainsburysbankcarins.co.uk

To prevent fraud and to ensure that any payments or refunds can be paid to you, we keep your credit/debit card details for the duration of your policy. By providing your card details, you consent to us doing this.

Car insurance database

Your policy details will be added to the Car Insurance Database, run by the Motor Insurers' Information Centre (MIIC). MID data my be used by the DVLA and DVLNI for the purpose of Electronic Vehicle Licensing and by the police for the purposes of establishing whether a driver's use of the vehicle is likely to be covered by a motor insurance policy and/or for preventing and detecting crime. If you are involved in an accident (in the UK or abroad), other UK insurers, the Motor Insurers' Bureau and MIIC may search the MID to obtain relevant policy information.

Persons pursuing a claim in respect of a road traffic accident (including citizens of other countries) may also obtain relevant information which is held on the MID.

You can find out more about this at www.miic.org.uk

Claims

Under the conditions of your policy you must tell us about any insurance related incidents (such as fire, water damage, theft or an accident) whether or not they will give rise to a claim. When you tell us about an incident we will pass information relating to it to a database.

We may search these databases when you apply for insurance, in the event of any incident or claim, or at time of renewal to validate your claims history or that of any other person or property likely to be involved in the policy or claim.

If you make a claim, we may need to give information about you and your policy to other people such as suppliers, investigators and loss adjusters. They will only use the information to help us with your claim.

Information on products and services

The information you have provided to us will be held and used by us and our agents to provide the insurance services you asked for and may be used by us for statistical analysis. The information may also be shared with Sainsbury's Bank and Sainsbury's Supermarkets for marketing purposes and with LMUK in connection with administering the Nectar programme where appropriate. Unless you have chosen not to receive it, we, or they, may contact you by mail, email or telephone to let you know about other goods or services that may interest you.

If you prefer not to receive this information, and have not previously informed us of this, please write to The Data Protection Officer, Sainsbury's Bank Car Insurance, The Observatory, Reigate, Surrey, RH2 0SG or email us at dpo@sainsburysbankcarins.co.uk.

You have the right to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you in our records. You will need to pay a small fee. You have the right to ask us to correct any inaccuracies in your information.
