Idea 4. Pay attention to petrol prices

As we all know, petrol can be extremely expensive - at 90p+ for a litre (more for diesel), fuel costs can add up to over £1000 a year. But there are differences in petrol prices around the UK, and some outlets are cheaper than others. It can be worth your while to see if any of them offer money-off vouchers or loyalty cards - you can collect Nectar points when you buy petrol at Sainsbury's, for instance.

If you want to go further on each tank of petrol check your tyre pressures. Under- inflated tyres increase fuel consumption - so does driving with the windows open!
