Idea 2

Carry a mix of payment methods

It's best to carry a mix of cash, debit cards and travellers' cheques rather than a huge wad of cash, for obvious reasons. US dollars are a safe bet in most of the developing world. Of course, it's wise to pay attention when you're taking money out - instead of rooting through all your valuables, consider keeping a few notes and coins for minor expenses in a convenient pocket (one that has buttons would be a good idea).

Another option is the versatile and secure American Express® Travellers Cheque Card, which you can order online from Sainsbury's Bank. The Card is prepaid and rechargeable, and can be used worldwide wherever American Express is accepted. And, just like travellers cheques, if it is ever lost or stolen, your funds can be replaced fast, usually within 24 hours. Since the Card is reusable, it's the perfect choice to use trip after trip.

Financial terminology can be confusing. Let our Jargon buster help you make sense of it.
