Security FAQ Security glossary

We make every effort to protect our customers, but it's important that you take steps to protect yourself online too. We recommend that you take the following approach to banking online, by protecting yourself and your computer.

protecting yourself

  • Always protect your password and security details (treat them like you do your bank card PIN number and never disclose them to anyone).
  • Make sure you sign off properly by selecting the 'log out' button when you have finished using our service.
  • Never leave your PC unattended when logged in, especially without a screen lock.
  • Always use a mixture of letters and numbers in both upper and lower case of your password.
  • Check your accounts regularly and report any suspicious transactions immediately. If you are concerned about any transactions while viewing them online contact the Online Helpdesk immediately on 0845 850 0092
  • Never open e-mails if you do not recognise the sender and do not respond to e-mails that request a reply with your password, including those that appear to be from Sainsbury's Bank Online. If you receive any please forward it to onlineinvestigations@sainsburysbank.co.uk
  • Only use trusted PCs, i.e. at home and work. Please be extra vigilant when using the online service outside the security of your own home, for example at public internet access points like internet cafes, libraries etc.

  • SSL certificates (represented by a yellow padlock at the bottom of your browser) which allow us to prove that we are who we say we are and encrypt data we code information (such as account details) to prevent other people from reading it.
  • Firewall protection to prevent unauthorised access from third parties and safeguard the account information held in our systems.
  • Time-out facility that automatically signs you out after 10 minutes of inactivity.
  • Dedicated security team to monitor the service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

security and privacy information

Every online application on the Sainsbury's Bank website is encrypted using 128-bit encryption - the latest and most powerful encryption technology available. This ensures information is virtually impossible for anyone else to read unless they have the 'key' or password. A secure communications link called a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encrypts all the information passed between your browser and our online applications.
