Protecting you online

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small piece of information placed onto your computer by the majority of websites that you visit. Cookies cannot be read by any website other than that which placed the cookie onto your computer.

Why do we use cookies?

If you use our online banking service, you will need to have cookies enabled on your browser.

We use cookies to:

  • Keep your online transactions secure. This is done by storing your sign-in details temporarily using a session cookie. This type of cookie will then be deleted when you sign out of the Online Banking service.
  • Enable you to access previously saved quotations.
  • Automatically sign you out of the service after 10 minutes of inactivity for security purposes.
  • Remember your username, but not your password or security information.†
  • Track your journey through our website to help us gain an understanding of our customers' behaviour on our site

Cookies from the Sainsbury's Bank website (apart from those which store your sign in details) will stay in your browser for 90 days before they will expire.

†If you have any anti-spyware software installed on your computer, for example 'cookie washing', this may mean that we are unable to store your username. You should not tick the box to remember your username if you are using a public or shared computer, as other users of this computer will be able to see your username.

Different types of cookies

There are two types of cookies - session cookies and persistent cookies.

Session cookies are temporary cookies which are stored on your computer until they are automatically deleted when you close your browser. This means the next time you visit a website it will not recognise you and so it will treat you as a completely new user.

Persistent cookies are cookies which remain on your computer until they expire or you delete them yourself. Our cookies remain on your computer for 90 days. This allows us to track which advertisements on external sites have led customers to our service. These cookies can also help manage the rotation of advertisements so that you get a more personalised experience when viewing our website.

Cookie Security

  • Cookies cannot obtain any personal information stored about you or anyone else on your computer.
  • Cookies cannot be used to identify who you are, unless you are logged in to our Online Banking service.
  • If anyone else has access to your computer or the computer you are using, cookies cannot be used by them to access any information about you and cookies do not in any way compromise the security of Online Banking.

How Webtrends uses cookies to track visitor data

In order to develop our website in line with customer needs Sainbsury's Bank is working with WebTrends to track usage on our website. Webtrends provide us with statistics to show us which pages on our website are visited most frequently and how long visitors spend on our website. We use this information to help us plan how we should improve the website.

WebTrends uses a cookie to track the number of unique users of the site. It basically tells us whether we have a small number of regular visitors to the website or a large number of infrequent visitors. None of the information can be traced to an individual - we do not know who you are as a unique user, merely that there are a certain number of people using the website. The cookie only relates to what goes on in the Sainsbury's Bank website and the information cannot be used for marketing on an individual basis. For more information about how WebTrends collects data, please read their privacy policy.

Disabling cookies

It is possible to disable the cookies when using this website. Please refer to your internet browser's help section for information on how to do this.
