DIY energy audit: a five-step checklist

By Money Matters Team 20/01/2014

Give your home an energy overhaul

Follow these simple steps to ensure your energy use is kept in check.

1. Work out where your money is going

Your energy bills are your first step to identifying what’s spent on heat and what’s spent on electricity. An energy monitor will reveal which of your electrical appliances are the greediest.

2. Is your heating system efficient?

Service your boiler to knock up to 6% off your gas or oil bill, and bleed the radiators to make sure they give out maximum heat.

3. Take control

Don’t just set the timer at the beginning of winter and leave it; adjust it as the weather changes, override to turn the heating off if you’re going to be out all evening, and turn down the thermostatic radiator valves in rooms that are not in use.

4. Eliminate draughts

Sealing around windows and doors, between floors and walls, and between floorboards is a simple DIY job that makes a huge impact on comfort. Also watch out for gaps around pipes and cables where they come through walls and floors.

5. Are you insulated?

Check that loft and cavity walls (if appropriate) have been insulated. If your loft was insulated a while ago, it may need topping up to the recommended 270mm. If you are not sure whether your cavity walls are insulated, ask an installer to insert a scope.
