Hints & tips
A healthy pet is a happy pet, so we thought we'd share a few top tips to keep your dog or cat in peak condition.
Looking after your dog
- Diet tips - making sure your dog has a healthy diet is essential. And remember, it’s quality not quantity. Don’t overfeed your dog
- Keep 'em collared - use a collar with your name and a contact number. So if your dog is lost, whoever finds them can easily contact you to ensure their safe return. Consider having your dog microchipped – your vet can tell you more about this
- Exercise - to help keep your dog fit, daily walks are important. And keep it interesting for you both – vary your route. If you are going to use a dog walker, make sure they understand your dog’s needs
- Interactive games - dogs are natural scavengers and problem solvers. So keep them entertained with interactive chews and toys. Fill them with a portion of their food, so they have to work to get it. Give your dog toys it can roll around the floor, or create a scent trail game with treats it has to sniff out
- Travel - when you take your dog in the car, make sure it has plenty of ventilation and shade and that fresh drinking water is readily available. Make regular stops to exercise your dog. If you’re going on holiday and leaving your dog behind, try to leave him or her with the people they know well or a trusted sitter or kennel
Handy cat tips
- Healthy diet - help keep your cat healthy with a suitable diet and plenty of fresh clean water
- Give them an identity - make sure your cat wears a collar with your name and a contact number attached. This means if they get lost, whoever finds them can easily get in touch. Consider having your cat microchipped – your vet can tell you more about this
- Healthy claws - keep your cat's claws in good shape by giving them a scratching post. A bristly doormat securely fixed in an upright position is a great solution - and it could save your furniture!
- Keep them entertained - if you don’t like your cat hunting, keep them entertained by giving him or her a toy to chase or hiding part of their daily dry food allowance in different places
- Take precautions - if your cat has gone outside, and you intend to drive anywhere, make sure you sound your car horn before you start it. Cats have been known to crawl up under the bonnet to keep warm
