Can I apply online?

You are able to apply for a mortgage online with Sainsbury’s Bank if you already know the type of mortgage you want and are happy to choose your own deal and apply for your mortgage without advice.

If you apply online, Sainsbury’s Bank is not required to assess the suitability of the mortgage you apply for and you will not receive the same protection offered by the Financial Conduct Authority’s rules as customers who get advice when applying by telephone. This is known as an execution only sale.

Please note, you will be unable to apply for a Sainsbury’s Bank mortgage online if any of the following points apply to you. But don’t worry, you can still apply for a Sainsbury’s Bank mortgage by giving us a call on 0345 111 8010** where one of our qualified mortgage advisers will be happy to help:

  • You have received advice on Sainsbury’s Bank mortgage products within the last 30 days
  • You are using any part of this mortgage for debt consolidation other than paying off your existing mortgage
  • The mortgage will extend beyond any of the applicants' expected retirement ages
  • You intend on borrowing more than 90% of either the property value or the purchase price (whichever amount is lower)
  • You purchase a property with any of the deposit coming from a family member
  • The names on the mortgage will not match the names on the title deeds

What do I need to apply for a mortgage?

During the application process, we’ll ask you questions about your finances to make sure you can afford the mortgage and that we are lending responsibly. Getting everything we need ready can help speed things up.

We need to know:

  • If you are purchasing a property, you’ll need to confirm details of your deposit
  • Your address for the last three years
  • Details about your job
  • Your yearly income including any bonuses and overtime
  • What you spend every month on financial commitments (such as any loan and credit card payments)
  • What your household spends every month (on things like food, energy, water and travel)
  • Details of the property you want the mortgage on

When you apply, we'll ask to see things like:

  • Your payslips to evidence any income you receive
  • A recent P60 if you are looking to include any bonuses, commission or overtime
  • Bank statements for your current account so that we can assess your affordability
  • Details of any deposit you wish to use

Once you’ve applied, we’ll let you know exactly what we need. It’s important to be as accurate as possible when running through your application so it’s helpful to have this information to hand. Check out our Income and ID guide for more information on what we might ask for. If you are submitting a joint application, please make sure you have the authority from the other applicant to provide their information.

As well as the relevant things listed above, we’ll also need to understand a bit more about your self-employed income. This will depend on what kind of business you have and your borrowing situation, but we’ll always ask for at least 2 years of:

  • If you’re a sole trader, the net profit of your business
  • If you’re in a partnership, your share of the net profit of the partnership
  • If you’re a company director, your gross salary and share of dividends

To evidence your self-employed income, we’ll usually ask to see things like:

  • Certified accounts signed off by a suitably qualified accountant
  • Self-Assessment Tax Calculation Forms (SA302) accompanied by Tax Year Overviews
  • Accountant’s certificates signed off by a suitable qualified accountant

Once you’ve applied, we’ll let you know exactly what we need. It’s important to be as accurate as possible when running through your application so it’s helpful to have this information to hand.
