Car & Home Insurances Renewal FAQs

On 30 July 2025 we announced that we’d entered into an agreement with Liverpool Victoria Insurance Company Limited (LV=), part of the Allianz UK Group, giving them the right to offer replacement car and home insurance policies to our existing car and home insurance customers. 

From 1 November 2025, we’ll stop offering renewals for home and car insurance.

Your existing policy will remain in place with the cover you purchased, and you can still expect the same trusted service from us. If you need to make any changes to your existing policy or claims, then please contact us as you normally would. 

Our Pet, Life and Travel Insurance will continue to be available as it is today.

Like us, LV= share our commitment to putting customers first. We believe LV= is well placed to help you with your future home and car insurance needs. 

We’re working closely with LV= to make sure you continue to receive high quality service without any disruption.

Frequently asked questions

Will I still have a Sainsbury’s Bank car/home insurance policy if I choose to accept the LV= quote?

Sainsbury’s Bank will no longer offer new car/home insurance, which means we can’t provide you with a renewal quote. If you have other products with us, there will be no change.

Will my cover stay the same with LV=?

There may be some changes to the cover offered by LV=. So, if you receive a quote from them you will need to carefully check the information to make sure the policy gives you the cover you need.

Do I have to take out a policy with LV=?

No. LV= will contact you around 30 days before your renewal date with a quote and information about what to do if you want to take out a policy with them.

My Sainsbury’s Bank policy is set to auto-renew – what does that mean?

Your policy will not automatically renew with LV=. If you wish to take out the policy offered by LV=, even if you have previously signed up for automatic renewal, you will need to contact LV= once you have received your quote to discuss payment options and accept the quote.

How will I continue to pay for my policy?

You should continue to pay for your current Sainsbury’s Bank policy as you do today until your renewal date. You will need to contact LV= once you have received your quote to discuss payment options.

What happens if I don’t take the home insurance policy with LV=?

If you don’t take the home insurance policy with LV= you will need to make sure you’ve arranged cover with another insurer. Your Sainsbury’s Bank cover will end on your policy expiry date.

What happens if I don’t take the car insurance policy with LV=?

If you don’t take the car insurance policy with LV= you will need to make sure you’ve arranged cover with another insurer. Your Sainsbury’s Bank cover will end on your policy expiry date.

Please remember that it is an offence under the Road Traffic Act to use or leave a vehicle parked on a road without a valid motor insurance policy in place.

What happens to my No Claim Discount (NCD)?

We’ll send you proof of NCD once your existing policy has expired.

We’ll tell LV= how many years NCD you (the main driver) have and that will be included on your quote.

If you take out cover with another insurer, they may ask to see your proof of NCD.

Can I still make changes to my policy while this move is happening?

Yes, you can still make changes up until your renewal date you should call us on 0345 266 1633

In some circumstances, we’ll tell LV= about any changes you make to your policy so your new quote is as accurate as possible. It’s important that you review the quote carefully and let LV= know if any of the information is incorrect, even if you’ve already told Sainsbury’s Bank about the change. If you have already received a quote from LV=, you need to let them and Sainsbury’s Bank know about any changes.

Can I still make a claim on my car insurance while this move is happening?

Yes, and to let us know about any incidents that happen up until your renewal date, please refer to your policy document for how to do this.

Can I still make a claim on my home insurance while this move is happening?

Yes, and to let us know about any incidents that happen up until your renewal date, please refer to your policy document for how to do this.

What happens to my existing claims?

Your current insurer will continue to deal with any existing claims until they are resolved.

What happens if LV= can’t offer me cover?

If LV= can’t offer you cover, they will write to you at least 30 days before your renewal date to tell you what this means for you.

What will happen to my personal data?

Data relating to your existing Sainsbury’s Bank policy will continue to be stored securely by your current insurer and Sainsbury’s Bank in line with their data retention policy, details of which can be found in your policy document.

If your personal data is transferred to LV=, this will be transferred and stored securely in line with LV= data policy Any personal data held by Sainsbury’s Bank that is not necessary to provide a quote and relates to your historical records will not transfer to LV= .

LV= will become the data controller for that personal data and will be responsible for using, storing and keeping it safe in compliance with applicable laws. For more information about how LV= will use your personal data, view their Privacy Notice at lv.com/insurance/data-protection

Any permissions you have previously given to us to send you marketing communications will not be transferred to LV=.

Any requests to exercise your data subject rights for any Sainsbury’s Bank Insurance policies you currently hold, or have held previously, should be made to Sainsbury’s Bank. For information about how Sainsbury’s Bank processes personal data, and details on how to exercise your data subject rights please see our Privacy Policy at sainsburysbank.co.uk/legals/leg-reg-privacy-policy. More information on how to access historical records will be sent to you after your Sainsbury’s Bank policy has ended.

Any requests to exercise your data subject rights, including data subject access requests, in relation to the personal data transferring to LV= should be made to LV= in accordance with its Privacy Notice at lv.com/insurance/data-protection 

What if I don’t want my personal data to be transferred to LV=?

If you don’t want your personal data to transfer to LV=, you can object to your data being transferred we’ll be in touch with you before your renewal date to give you sufficient notice of the transfer and information about how to object.

Will my marketing permissions change?

Sainsbury’s Bank will not share marketing permissions with LV=.  

If you decide to take out a new policy with LV=, they will contact you directly about your marketing preferences.

Why has Sainsbury’s Bank decided to stop offering renewals for existing home and car insurance policies?

This decision was made to align with our strategy to deliver the right products for Sainsbury’s customers in a simplified and sustainable way.

I already have an insurance policy with LV= - what does that mean for me?

There will be no change to any policy you already have with LV=.

I have car and home insurance with Sainsbury’s Bank – what does that mean for me?

We’ll be in touch with you about each of your policies separately, ahead of your renewal dates. If you object to your data transferring to LV= for one policy the objection will not automatically apply to your other policy unless you explicitly state that you want to object to your data being transferred for both policies.

I’ve recently missed a payment on my Sainsbury’s Bank policy – can I still get a quote from LV=?

If you miss a payment, we’ll give you 28 days to bring your account up to date, after that we’ll cancel your Sainsbury’s Bank policy and you’ll be sent a cancellation notice.

If you’re sent a cancellation notice after your data has transferred to LV=, you may still receive a quote from LV= around 30 days before your renewal date.

There is an additional policy holder on my account, will their personal data transfer to LV=?

Yes, the personal data for any additional policy holders will transfer to LV=, unless you object to all personal data being transferred.

If you’re happy for your own personal data to transfer to LV=, but don’t want any personal data relating to additional policy holders being transferred, you should remove them from your Sainsbury’s Bank policy.

There is a named driver(s) on my account, will their personal data transfer to LV=?

Yes, the personal data for any named drivers will transfer to LV=, unless you object to all personal data being transferred.

If you’re happy for your own personal data to transfer to LV=, but don’t want any personal data relating to named drivers being transferred, you should remove them from your Sainsbury’s Bank policy.

There is power of attorney registered on my account, will their personal data transfer to LV=?

No, the personal data for a Power of Attorney will not be transferred to LV=. If you decide to take out a new policy with LV= you should contact LV= to set up Power of Attorney on your new policy.

My mailing address is different to the address that my insurance policy covers. What address will my insurance quote be sent to?

LV= will contact you around 30 days before your renewal date with a quote, this will be sent to the address that your insurance policy covers.
