Home insurance no claims discount

Save on home insurance with a no claims discount

If something is damaged or stolen from your home, it's time to make a claim. Making a claim may mean that you could pay more for your policy when you renew.

But what happens if you don’t make any claims? You could end up paying less for your cover - and that means you can spend more on things like revamping the lounge.

What is a no claims discount?

A no claims discount (NCD), also known as a no claims bonus, is a reward for not claiming on your insurance. If you have a policy with Sainsbury’s Bank and go a year without making any claims, then you’ll get your no claims bonus on your home insurance.

That means you’ll get money off on your renewal. Then, if you don’t make a claim again in your second year of home insurance, you could receive a bigger discount. The more years you remain claim free, the better your discount will be (up to a limit).

What happens if you claim?

We have separate discounts for contents and buildings insurance, so the process is different depending on what you claim for.

If you claim on your contents insurance, we’ll reduce your home insurance no claims discount, but not your buildings cover discount. That works the other way, too. So if you claim on your buildings cover, we’ll reduce that discount when you renew but not on your contents insurance. And if you claim under both policies, then we’ll reduce both discounts.

What if you claim under some of our optional extras, like personal possessions cover? Then it’ll affect your contents insurance discount at your next renewal date in line with our scale.

Your home insurance no claims discount increases the more years you go claim-free.

Here’s a rundown of how it all works:

Current number of years NCD Number of years NCD at next renewal, if you make:
No claims 1 claim 2 claim 3 claims
0 1 0 0 0
1 2 0 0 0
2 3 0 0 0
3 4 2 0 0
4 5 3 1 0
5 6 3 1 0
6 7 3 1 0
7 8 3 1 0
8 9 3 1 0
9+ 9 3 1 0

How to make a claim

We know it can be stressful if you need to make a claim on your home insurance policy. It’s important that you contact us as soon as possible to do so, though. The sooner you report it, the sooner we can help you.

To make a claim, just call the 24-hour helpline number 0345 266 1660.

Depending on how long you’ve had home insurance with Sainsbury’s Bank, we’ll then adjust your NCD accordingly. We will provide you with evidence of your NCD after a claim and when we send renewal documents. This can be used as your home insurance no claims proof.

You can only use your home insurance no claims discount on one policy at a time, and you can’t transfer it to another person.

Even if we increase your NCD when you renew, the cost of your cover could still go up. That’s because we take a lot of different things into account when we work out your renewal premium.

Protect your no claims bonus for optional extras

You won’t lose your no claims bonus for your home insurance if you claim under one of these optional extras:

  • Home emergency cover – designed to help give you protection against life’s little emergencies
  • Family legal protection – can help cover your costs if you have to go to court for a private legal dispute
  • Key cover – we can help cover the costs of repairing or replacing your keys and locks if they’re damaged or stolen
  • Home excess cover – can refund you for any excess you paid after a successful, settled eligible claim on your insurance
