Cover for lost or stolen pets

Cover for lost or stolen pets

Pets are precious – that's why we offer theft and straying cover

Provided by Pinnacle Insurance plc

How does our theft or straying cover work?

Pet theft is more common than you might think, and adventurous cats and dogs can often stray or get lost.

Our advertising & reward cover can help towards:

  • Local advertising expenses
  • Rewards offered for your pet’s return

But if the unthinkable happens and your cat or dog is still missing after 30 days, we’ll give you what you paid for your pet, up to your policy’s limit.

There are some breeds that we won't cover under our £10,000 limit which you can find details of in our FAQ section. Please note that we won't cover any pre-existing conditions an that terms, conditions, excesses and exclusions and limitations apply. You can find out more about the terms of our cover in our policy documents.

Limits on our theft and straying cover

There are a few things our cover won’t pay out for and it’s important to bear these in mind.

The insurance won’t pay if:

  • Your pet strays, goes missing or gets stolen within the first 14 days of your policy
  • Your dog isn’t microchipped properly

How to make a claim

The first thing you need to do is report your missing pet straight away. You should tell the vet nearest to where your cat or dog went missing or the local rescue centre or authority warden.

If you do have to make a claim, there are a few things we’ll need to sort out. You should have:

Log on to My Pet Portal where the claims form is available to download. Or, alternatively call our claims team on 0344 543 1032 and we'll send you a form to complete and return to us.

Still got questions?

If you’ve still got questions about what happens if your pet goes missing, or anything else to do with pet insurance, our FAQs can help.

What if I didn’t keep the receipt after I bought my pet?

If you don’t have the original receipt, don’t worry. We can use market value for your pet or the amount you paid when you applied for your pet insurance. We’ll use the lower of these two figures for sorting out a payment if your pet is still missing after 30 days.

How big a reward should I offer?

A reward gets people talking and encourages them to come forward if they’ve got information that might help get your cat or dog back. This can make all the difference, so offering a reward is a good idea.

The safe return cover you get with our pet insurance policy will pay that reward up to a maximum of £1,000 for Time Limited policies and £1,500 for Lifetime policies.
