Affordable travel destinations in 2014

By Money Matters Team 23/01/2014

A look at some of 2014's best value holiday destinations.

During the cold winter months, you might want to start looking forward to a spring or summer getaway. However, with the expense of Christmas and New Year perhaps still impacting your finances, splashing out on a holiday might not seem possible. Luckily, 2014 could be a great year for those wishing to travel on a budget, with many affordable destinations on offer.

Greece & the Greek Islands

Greece has seen dropping visitor numbers over the past few years which has subsequently resulted in a drop in prices. With a great number of deals available, travellers have the chance to enjoy some of the most famous landmarks in the world without breaking the bank. Whether you want to simply enjoy the hot Mediterranean sun, have a family day out at the beach or stroll through ancient ruins, Greece and the surrounding islands of Crete, Corfu and Rhodes offer a wealth of history and entertainment at a low price.

When holidays in Mexico are mentioned, your first thought might be of extravagant and expensive resorts, but there are a number of options available for those on a tight budget. Good value flights can be found and as long as you avoid visiting the country during peak times, such as national U.S. holidays, you could find accommodation at a very reasonable price, particularly in beach towns such as Chacala on the Pacific coast.

For a family holiday, Portugal could be hard to beat. Coupling beautiful countryside and coastline with bustling city life, the Algarve region is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. It offers plenty of cheap accommodation during the off peak season and very reasonable prices for food and drink all year round. Fantastic deals can also be found in Portugal’s historic capital, Lisbon, the oldest city in Western Europe. It also offers the additional benefit of an efficient and low cost tram service, making it particularly easy to navigate and ideal for groups or families. The northern city of Porto has also been tipped to be one one of the best value holiday destinations in 2014.

The Canary Islands

The islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have long been popular with people of all ages due to the reasonable prices found across the islands and the beautiful sunshine which beams down almost all year round. The islands are renowned for being incredibly family friendly, with Los Cristianos in Tenerife and Playa Blanca in Lanzarote being two particularly prominent resorts. Fuerteventura is widely recommended for those looking to enjoy a quieter and more laid back family trip.

Of course, you don’t have to travel abroad to enjoy some time away with your loved ones; the ever popular southern county of Cornwall, and the town of St. Ives in particular, is well worth a visit. With balmy temperatures during the spring and summer months, the region is ideal for those looking to enjoy a relaxed holiday by the coast, whether it’s for an extended stay or for a weekend getaway. St. Ives boasts five stunning beaches and plenty of scenic walking trails, suitable for both adults and kids.

Whatever your budget and preferred holiday destination, hopefully the above has given you some inspiration to pack those bags and get away from it all for a while.
