FAQs

Where is the best place to go for winter sun?

The best winter sun destinations are near the equator or in the Southern Hemisphere, as they offer a summer climate during the UK’s winter. Popular choices include the Maldives, Cape Verde, the Caribbean islands, and South Asia. If you prefer short-haul flights, there are also warm-weather winter destinations in Europe  – such as the Canary Islands.

Where is the warmest in winter?

Cancun, Mexico, is in the top three hottest destinations in December (30.4°C), January (30.5°C), and February (32.3°C), according to the Met Office's average hottest temperatures for those months. So, it’s fair to say that Cancun is one of the warmest places to go in the winter months. The Dominican Republic, Barbados, and Cape Verde also appear in the top positions so are great options for sun in December, January and February.

Where is the warmest place to spend Christmas?

Cancun (30.4°C), the Dominican Republic (29.6°C), and Barbados (29.5°C) offer the three highest average temperatures in December, says the Met Office. So all three could be considered among the best holiday destinations in December for those seeking Christmas sun. In Cancun the festive period falls during the dry season, too, with only 38mm rainfall – compared to 186mm in July – so though you may not get a ‘white Christmas’ you may well get a ‘dry’ one.
