Buying Icelandic króna: FAQs
What is the Icelandic króna?
The Icelandic króna is the official currency of Iceland. Its currency code is ISK, and its symbol is kr or Íkr. When you talk about more than one króna the term is krónur. The word krone or krona, which means crown, is used in other Nordic currencies, such as Denmark and Sweden. The Central Bank of Iceland (Sedlabanki Islands) issues the Icelandic króna, which has been in use since the early 1920s.
What’s the best currency to take to Iceland?
The best currency to take to Iceland is the Icelandic króna. Abbreviated as ISK, it’s the official currency of the country. As Iceland is not a member of the European Union its businesses generally do not accept the euro, so consider taking Icelandic króna instead if you do want to carry some cash.
Is it better to use cash or card in Iceland?
You’ll be able to use your card in most places in Iceland. While people prefer using card over cash, it’s still worth having some Iceland currency in cash in case you need it. Cash may come in handy if you plan to buy souvenirs from street vendors or venture further from tourist hotspots.
Is tipping expected in Iceland?
No, tipping is not expected in Iceland. In most cases, a service charge will be added to your bill. This is usually paid directly to the company rather than to the person who served you in a bar or restaurant.
How much is a pound in Iceland?
