Creating your own Christmas decorations

By Money Matters Team 18/12/2013

Creating homemade Christmas decorations and ornaments is not only a great way to save money, but also an excellent chance to get the kids involved in preparing for the festive season.

Some of the members of our Blogger Network had some fantastic ideas for homemade decorations the whole family can enjoy. Here are some of our favourites:

Reindeer handprint Christmas cards

Jennifer’s Little World

Sew Scrumptious

What better way to get the kids excited for Santa’s visit than helping them to make their own Christmas stocking? Louise at Sew Scrumptious has come up with an excellent tutorial which will suit any level of sewer, from beginner to expert.

Waterless snow globes

The Making Home

Waterless snow globes

Sure to add a festive touch to any mantlepiece, Davina’s waterless snow globes are simple enough for young children to help make. Gather some empty jam jars, christmas cake decorations, fake snow (or salt), some PVA glue and voila - you’ll have a waterless snow globe put together in no time.

felt reindeer

Needle felted reindeer

Knitty Mummy

Kath at Knitty Mummy has come up with an adorable addition to any home during Christmas. The needle felted reindeer is a truly cute character and while it might be a bit too tricky for the kids to help make, they’re sure to love the finished product! The reindeer follows Kath’s needle felted robin which she made last Christmas.

We hope the ideas above have sparked your imagination. You can also take a look at what the Money Matters team have been up to recently, adding some festive flavour to their own bird house key hooks.

So, why not sit down with the kids and come up with your own homemade Christmas decoration ideas? Not only will you have the opportunity to create a delightful item to brighten up the home, you’ll also create some beautiful yuletide memories.
