We’ve got your back – no matter how you book
If you book a package holiday through a travel agent or tour operator, you’ll usually be financially protected if things don’t go to plan.
But when you book your flights and accommodation separately, your hard-earned cash might not be so safe. That’s where travel insurance with disruption cover comes in.
How does travel insurance with disruption cover work?
Travel disruption insurance protects you when the unexpected happens. For example, if you can’t get home from your trip or can no longer stay in your hotel.
It could help cover the costs of your expenses if you can’t recover them from your airline, accommodation, or travel provider.
Why choose Sainsbury’s Bank Travel Insurance with travel disruption cover?
You can add travel disruption cover to your Gold and Platinum insurance policy, meaning we could offer financial help if you:
-
Can’t get home from your trip
-
Are no longer able to stay in your accommodation
-
Need to cancel or cut your trip short
You'll also get:
- Up to 20% off if you’re a Nectar member. Exclusions apply*
- Access to a 24-hour helpline in case of medical emergencies while you’re away
What's included?
We’ll help cover your costs – up to the limits set out below and in your certificate of insurance:

Cancellation or cutting short your trip
If you can’t travel to your destination, stay in your accommodation, or you need to abandon your trip due to:
- The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office or other similar body advising against travel or recommending evacuation±
- Extreme weather disruption or a natural disaster (for example, a fire, flood, earthquake, explosion, hurricane, tsunami, landslide, avalanche, volcanic eruption or storm)
- An outbreak of food poisoning or infectious disease±
- A strike resulting in your travel from the UK being cancelled
- The Channel Tunnel or airport, port or airspace which you expected to travel through being closed for 24 hours±
We’ll help cover the cost of:
- Travel and accommodation
- Airport parking and car hire
- Kennel or cattery fees
- Excursions
Substitute accommodation
We’ll also help cover the cost of alternative accommodation and transport if you’re no longer able to stay in your accommodation because of:
- Extreme weather or a natural disaster (for example, a fire, flood, earthquake, explosion, hurricane, tsunami, landslide, avalanche, volcanic eruption or storm)
- An outbreak of food poisoning or an infectious disease
This cover will only apply if you can’t recover costs from your accommodation provider.
You’ll need to pay for accommodation and transport initially then claim back the cost later. So, make sure you’ve got access to enough cash or credit to allow this.
Enforced stay
You’ll also get protection if you can’t get home because any of the following are closed for more than 24 hours:
- Airport
- Airspace
- Channel Tunnel
- Port
If your travel provider doesn’t offer you alternative travel arrangements, you may have to make your own way home. If that happens, we can help cover the cost of your travel expenses.
We’ll also give you £150 each day you’re stuck for additional expenses (up to a maximum of £1,500). This could pay for things like food, a place to stay or phone bills.
And if you need additional prescription medicine, we’ll help cover the cost of replenishing that too. This will only apply if you’ve declared a pre-existing medical condition and packed sufficient supplies to cover the original duration of your trip.
What if my airline goes bust?
If the airline you’re travelling with becomes insolvent while you’re abroad, don’t worry. Our end supplier failure cover will protect you.
Like travel disruption cover, this is an option on our Gold and Platinum travel insurance.
