New build home insurance

There’s no better feeling than the rush of excitement as you step foot into your brand-new home. Get started with home insurance for your shiny new pad today.

What kind of insurance do I need for a new build?

Whether you’ve just moved into your first home or third – insurance can be a lot to wrap your head around. Wherever you are on the property ladder, home insurance is an essential.

There isn’t a specific new build home insurance policy type, you can just take out regular home insurance for your new build property. Typically, home insurance is split into two categories – buildings and contents.

Buildings insurance

Buildings insurance covers the structural elements of your home – rather than what’s inside. It includes things like fitted kitchens or bathrooms, wardrobes, doors, windows, walls, and the roof. Mortgage providers will insist that you have buildings insurance as part of the mortgage agreement.

Our buildings insurance covers as standard:

  • Building cover up to £1 million sum
  • Accidental damage cover
  • Trace and access

Contents insurance

Contents insurance concerns what’s inside your home, like your belongings. This includes things like home appliances, jewellery, electronics, clothing and furniture. Simply put, it’s the items in your home you’d take with you when you move.

With our contents insurance, you can get cover for:

  • Contents, with a lump sum of up to £75,000 and up to £2,000 for a single item
  • Accidental  damage cover
  • Mobile phone and gadget cover
  • Jewellery cover
  • Bike cover

Frequently asked questions

Do you need home insurance on a new build?

While home insurance isn’t a legal requirement, it’s a must-have when it comes to owning a house. Mortgage lenders will require you to have buildings insurance to get a mortgage agreement, so you may need home insurance for a new build.

What is the 10-year guarantee on a new build house?

The New Build 10 Year Warranty is a ten year new build insurance policy. It protects property developers, contractors, builders and owners against significant structural damage. While the warranty is not a legal requirement, it’s often a necessity for lenders.

Is new build home insurance more expensive?

Sometimes, new build home insurance can work out cheaper than insuring older properties. This is due to the newer structures and up-to-date safety and security standards, as well as new wiring and plumbing systems – that may come with less claim risk. For example, some new builds have built-in safety features, which may bring down home insurance premiums.
